PostSubject: Dual Specs and Hybrids   4/25/2009, 11:35 am

I have a question.

Recently we have had some major changes in the game. Namely 1 Hybrids will do approximately the same DPS as Pure DPS, and Dual Specs.

I have been really excited for both of these changes at the time but the combination has created an interesting problem for me.

I play a Warlock. Pure DPS, and I really enjoy it, but with dual spec I dont fave much option I can go PvE/PvP, which I don't do or Pve/situational PvE(like AoE etc) As I have been raiding I notice that the shadow priests in the raid can keep up with me in DPS, and they have the ability to switch to a healer. So Finally to my question.

For Maximum Raid Utility do Hybrids trump Pures? I understand that you never need to split up the entire raid into Heals/Tanks, but isnt the option preferred when their DPS is as high?

Does dual spec pretty much force me to learn to like PvP?

I think that the end result is going to be my switching my main to a Hybrid, because I enjoy bringing that kind of utility to a raid.

Aside from PVP, when I played my warlock I switched between specs based on the raid encounter. In MC/BWL there were quite a few mobs/bosses that were all but immune to fire. So, I went more Affliction for those nights.

I however, loved PVP on my warlock. So, I am sure I would utilize dual spec for that reason as well.

As far as pure DPS vs. hybrid, an emphasis should be placed just as much on varied play style. When a hybrid switches specs, it is almost like playing an entirely different toon... at least it feels that way to me. A pure DPS switching specs basically adjusts their rotation. Being a great player who can adapt and be flexible while cranking our max hybrid DPS then switching to HPS, or visa versa takes a great deal of insight and trial and error.

Besides, druidz rock....

But, that is just my opinion...

I guess another way of looking at your two trees as a DPS class is to consider things like threat and 'hit'.

There are some encounters where threat isn't an issue so you might switch to a spec that deals huge hit and crit chances, meanwhile your regular raiding spec may reduce your threat at the cost of some dps.

Stomp makes a great point for warlocks, there is such a difference between the affliction tree and the Destruction tree. You even have the Demon tree to consider which can lend itself to certain fights...I remember we had a lock that spec'd specifically to tank Leo'thoras the Blind in SSC.

I'd say look into the encounters you're going to face and see if you can pick out a tree that will lend itself to aiding your raid's progress. Learn to wield both your regular tree and a 'utility' spec and you'll be a great asset to the guild.

There also is the issue of specialized talents that are helpful situationally.

For me since I DPS and OT sometimes, my off-spec is for tanking. Some classes might have a talent that is especially good for a couple of different events but not for relaly much of anything else. (Guardian Spirit and Divine Sacrifice come to mind, although I don't know how often those are used outside of Sartharion).

If you love your one spec and don't really have to play another role, the dual spec is a great way to be able to get to that "special talent" without having to respec and still be able to use that great situational talent. Th3en you can just switch back to your regular spec after the event and go back to the tried and true.

Dual spec is definitely useful,. but it is what you make of it, for sure.

Well I think his problem is deciding what to do with the other spec. My advice would be read up on the benefits of the warlock specs and try 2 out. If you don't like one then try a third. If anything try pvp and this is from a pvp whore but you may love it. I was like you and figures pvp was not me. Then I saw the gear ,and this was back when honor had just come out, and I used it to gear up for bwl on my priest. I then joined my first bg and let me tell you the adrenaline rush I had. I was immediatly addicted. Too bad my lifestyle didn't permit me being on 24/7 like you needed to be to get grand marshal cause I would hve. It's different now but still
It's a lot easier for a new guy to get into. I think of it as almost raiding but a lot more difficult to be the best(duelist or gladiator). Duelists clear ulduar and some of the hard modes but gladiators do it all hard mode baby! In short try any of the above I feel I'm ranting at this time.

Thanks for all of the feedback!

Aellerian, I have done PvP a LOT. I can't stand it.

I really love to do PvE, and I try to be as helpful as possible. I know I could switch between 2 DPS specs depending on the fight, but I think that having a Heal or Tank/DPS is going to be much more beneficial to a raid group. I played a healer for a long time, and it was okay I liked tanking a lot more, but DPS is the funnest. So I think that I am going to have to play a class that can DPS and Tank.

Keep in mind that dual-speccing is a choice - it's really there for the convenience of people who changed between two specs so frequently that a one-time, 1000g payment for the ability to do it whenever they wanted to is cheaper and easier. For those of us who play a certain class a certain way and are happy with that, you could go without dual-specs on any number of "pure" mains or alts. I can definitely feel you on hating PvP - I've no desire to spec any of my characters for it because it drives me insane.

That aside, there is some benefit to be had for two PvE specs on a pure class along the lines of what Hafrot said - the one that comes to my mind for replenishment classes like warlocks post-3.1 is one spec with replenishment, and one without. This could range anywhere from min-maxing specs in the same tree depending on whether your raid has replenishment already, or a spec in an entirely different tree if, say, you prefer Affliction to Destruction, but want to fill in on replenishment when needed. That's actually what I'm doing with my main at the moment, though I must admit I find myself sneakily switching back to Survival because I've yet to get my Marksmanship skill up to meter-topping levels. >.>

I think the hybrid vs. pure concern was one that's really only relevant for people raiding at the very high end, as people seem to forget that in order to be competitive in multiple roles, you need to assemble a set of BiS gear for that role. For someone who raids five or six days a week with a decked-out raid group or has no competition on gear for their secondary spec, that's not too hard to achieve, but for everyone else, it usually translates into double the amount of time spent in order to perform two roles effectively. Regardless, I think blizzard's done well at balancing what each class brings to the table in the way of buffs and utility, so if you're having trouble keeping a slot in your raid group playing the class you enjoy, I think that's a problem with the raid group. =)

That's kind an interesting point, but still think that the "Higher End" Raiders would be the one Min/Maxxing DPS classes. Not necessarily the ones going Heal/DPS etc.

I don't know that I will ever be "High End". My wife is understanding, but still wants me to hang out with her 2-3 nights a week. I am decent enough at my class, and can put out respectable damage, but I don't know if i will ever meet a "progression raid schedule"

I really enjoy progressing and seeing end-content, but I have more fun running in social groups and hanging out with people. I keep trying to find a decent group, but it seems that every player that isn't socially awkward is die-hardcore.

Wow i kind of went off topic there. I have rolled a DK to try DPS/Tank, and see if I can find a good group. I rolled Ally cause I haven't had an end level Ally. Plus there are more noobs on Alliance right? Wink

Well, I dunno about that, I manage to be socially awkward and a casual raider. >.>; And no faction, race, or class has a monopoly on stupid. XDD

There are different levels of min/maxing, but what I had in mind was someone who wanted to do most they could for their raid, and had one of their specs in a replenishment tree that wasn't their favorite way to play the class ('cause as much as I enjoy Survival's kaboom-awesome DPS, I will be main-speccing Marks once I figure it out because it's how I like to play). Not so much the 3/5 vs. 2/5 in one or two talents kind of thing most people think of first when min/maxing is brought up.

Your armory link reminds meh - I was hanging out in my office hours today playing my DK ('cause NOBODY ever shows up), and I couldn't suppress a maniacal laugh every time I got bloodworms. "Kill, my wormy minions... KILL!"
